Human remains identified as Dixie County child

David Fierro, Communications Coordinator for Florida Department of Law Enforcement, shared a press release from the Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office.

BELL, Fla. – It is with sorrow that Gilchrist County Sheriff Bobby Schultz and Dixie County Sheriff Darby Butler report the body of 14-year-old Demiah Appling has been identified. The child was reported missing from Old Town on October 16.

On December 5, human remains were found in Bell, and the Tallahassee FDLE Crime Lab was able to confirm the identity as Demiah. The Eighth District Medical Examiner has ruled the death as a homicide.

Dixie County Sheriff’s Office is leading the homicide investigation, which remains active.
