Live Oak, Fla., – As we honor our veterans this November 11, with parades, ceremonies and luncheons, Live Oak Veterans’ Day Parade Chairman Jim Broe said something in an email the Suwannee Valley Times felt was a necessary reminder for us all. With his permission we are sharing it with our readers.
He had just left the VA the morning he sent the email for the Veterans’ Day news release.
On his way out, one of the techs said, “Thank you for your service.”
Broe said, “I thought to myself, no matter how often I hear that, it’s one thing I’ll never tire of hearing. When I came “home” from Vietnam, like so many others, I was spat upon. Needless to say, that moment is burned into my memory. So hearing the ‘thanks’ means a LOT to me! Which is why I am so grateful for your support!!”
Here below are the Veterans’ Day happenings in Live Oak.
Thursday, November 11th, several local businesses and individuals in Suwannee County, are proud to present the Suwannee Veterans’ Day Parade and Ceremony. This year’s theme is: REMEMBERING 9/11.
The Parade begins at 9:00 AM at Suwannee Elementary School, running North on Ohio Ave., to Howard Ave. West, ending at the ball field. We invite you and encourage you to attend this heart-warming event, which continues to grow and improve. Starting this year, entries will be judged for appearance, patriotism and recognizing the Parade Theme. Prizes for the top three.
Floats, Vehicles and special guests including many local Veterans and military vehicles will be featured in the Parade. Please, join us and support your local Veterans’ community and your neighbors as we celebrate this auspicious Holiday.
At 11:00 AM, a Commemorative Ceremony will take place at the Live Oak Cemetery on Ohio Ave. North, organized by The American Legion Harry C. Gray II Post 107 and Disabled American Veterans, Live Oak Chapter 126. Help us recognize and honor all those in our community who have answered the call of duty – some who never returned.
After the Ceremony, Live Oak Elks Lodge, on Howard Street East, will present a free Chicken Dinner. Veterans and their families are cordially invited! The American Legion and DAV recommend donations, as you are able, to help The Elks continue this great tradition.
Lake City is honoring their Veterans with a drive thru event at the VA this year.
