In addition to RIVEROAK’s regular electrical classes, they have been awarded another grant to add an electrical class for an apprenticeship program for the very first time.

“The apprenticeship will be with Electrical Alliance of Gainesville,” said Electrical Instructor Jeremy Ulmer.

The school received the grant from the Department of Education.

“It’s our first dabble into apprenticeship, we’re trying,” said Janora Crow, who is the school’s grant writer.

RIVEROAK’s Principal/Director of Career and Technical Education Mary Keen said, “We are partnering with the Electrical Alliance of Gainesville. We are the recipient of a  grant created to help expand apprenticeship programs across the state of Florida.”

Keen added that quite a few private entities that apply for these apprenticeship grants receive them. “Basically, any apprenticeship program throughout the state can apply for that grant. It does not have to be an educational agency.”  She added that at the end of that apprenticeship program, students would become a certified electrician. They do not get that from the other electrical classes at RIVEROAK.

“We are trying to implement the classes now,” Ulmer said, “but will most likely be this fall (when they are in full swing).”

Anyone interested should contact RIVEROAK’s student services.
